WCW Series Post #3 - dodie

Updated: Jan 30, 2019

If you’ve traveled around the internet, you might have heard of Dodie. She’s been making YouTube videos since 2011 but she’s not just a vlogger—she’s rising to mainstream fame with her catchy indie-pop music. Based in the UK, Dodie got her start writing and recording her own music and posting it on her YouTube channel doddleoddle. Since then, she’s upped her game and released 3 EPs on all the major streaming services.

Dodie gained an audience on YouTube through her unique musical style, her carefully curated aesthetic, and her willingness to talk about her bisexuality and her struggles with mental health issues. She posts original music, music videos, and covers to her nearly 2.8 million subscribers on her main channel doddleoddle. Her second channel, doddlevloggle, is her self-proclaimed “laid back channel”—here she posts vlogs and other more casual content. Her 3 EPs are Intertwined (2016), You (2017) and Human (2019). (Human just came out last week and it’s incredible—more on this in a minute!) You can find these EPs anywhere you usually listen to music. Yay for 21st century convenience!

Dodie has a knack for writing music that might literally rip your heart out of your body—some examples of this are her songs “6/10”, “Burned Out”, and “Sick of Losing Soulmates” which has a cute/sad/gay music video that you should watch right now. Her song “She” has made waves. Dodie originally released the anthem for unrequited queer love as a video in 2014 and it was wildly popular among her followers—the original video has nearly 5 million views. On her recent EP Human, the song finally got the professional recording it deserved. If you only listen to one Dodie song, make it this one. You’ll probably cry which means it’s a good one. All of Human deserves a listen—the entire EP is painfully beautiful. The best kind of beautiful!
