WCW Series Post #2 - girl in red

Thanks for coming back for another Woman Crush Wednesday! This week I want you to meet another artist who was featured on our first playlist: Girl in Red.

Marie Ulven, known by her stage name Girl in Red, is a 19-year-old singer-songwriter from Oslo, Norway. Belonging to a new generation of bedroom pop stars, Girl in Red writes songs for queer girls of the twenty-first century. Her most viewed YouTube video is for her song “girls”- a coming out anthem whose comment section has turned into a sort of confessional for her young fans. One comment reads: “I have a crush on my best friend, I live in a homophobic community, I’ve watched this video at least 30 times, and I can’t wait until I’m able to do what I want to do and be who want to be.” In the age of the internet, queer music fosters a sense of community and belonging that many LGBTQ+ teens might not find in their hometowns, and Girl in Red’s YouTube channel is proof of this.

Her dreamy, retro pop has earned her over 900,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, with her most popular song, “summer depression,” clocking in at over six million streams. Her music videos are the ultra-gay works of art that we deserve. Girl in Red is really rising in the queer pop scene and I can’t wait to see what she does next. This year, she’s going on tour in the US with Conan Gray (another great artist who you should be listening to, but that’s a topic for another day…) so if you’re near any of these cities, you should check her out. Support queer artists! Stream their music! Tip your bartenders! (Not totally relevant here but a good reminder nonetheless.)

Now that you’ve gotten to know Girl in Red, give her a follow on Twitter @_girlinred_, and if you want to see future Woman Crush Wednesday posts, follow Rose Quartz on Twitter and Instagram @rosequartzmag to be notified when a new post comes out. (No pun intended.) (Actually yes, pun intended.)

See you next week!

With love,

Caroline
