WCW Series Post #1 - King Princess

Updated: Jan 16, 2019

Hello Rose Quartz cuties!

My name is Caroline and you might have run into me on Instagram, where I keep you updated on all things Rose Quartz.

Role models are important at every stage of life. This should go without saying, but even into adulthood, I think it’s important to see yourself reflected in people who are visible in the media. The age of the internet is making it continually easier to find your people, whoever and wherever they may be. Every Wednesday, I’m going to introduce you to a queer woman who is making waves, whether it be in music, film, literature, online video, or elsewhere. Consider this series my middle school crush list, but like, the grown-up version of that. Maybe it’ll be yours, too.

This week, I want you to meet someone who’s name I have spent endless nights searching on YouTube: King Princess.

A little bit of general info, some of it paraphrased from her Wikipedia page:

Mikaela Straus, known by her stage name King Princess, is a twenty-year-old musician from Brooklyn, New York. She is relatively new to the music scene—her debut single “1950” was released in February of 2018. The song is a tribute to queer love, based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt. In June of 2018, she released her EP “Make My Bed” and has since amassed nearly six million monthly listeners on Spotify.

I love King Princess because she writes unapologetically queer music about the ups and downs of falling in and out of love, the pain of wanting it back, and the joy of finding it again. Her music videos are visually striking and give us the WLW representation we deserve—away from the male gaze. Check out her new song “Pussy is God”—it’ll make you want to go to straight to church. (But maybe like, gay church? Is there gay church?) Her song “Holy” is included in Rose Quartz’s first playlist about falling in love. Expect to see her on our future playlists because her music is just that good and I am just that obsessed.

You can find all of her music videos on her YouTube channel—watch them all and fall in love. Trust me, you will. I promise.

If you want to be notified about future Woman Crush Wednesday posts, you can follow Rose Quartz on Instagram where I post about what we’re up to on the other days of the week: instagram.com/rosequartzmag. See you next Wednesday!

With love,

Caroline
