Two figures stand
shoulder-to-shoulder.
At the edge
of their toes
a thick, even
red line presses
into the dirt
reaching for horizons
left and right.
One figure —
ready to cross.
And the other?
Less so.
There is much
to weigh when
dealing with things
that are unknown.
There are decisions
to be made
and the consequences
to be owned.
There’s turning around,
or there is
forward to go.
One figure —
well and ready.
And the other?
Needs time.
For these things
are quite final
when they are
etched in red
at the tips
of your toes.
